Maintenance
Modern BMW's use a Service Interval Light system. The lights will indicate when you are due for service based on your driving habits
The Service Indicator consists of five green, one yellow, and one red light and the inscriptions: "Oil service" and "Inspection" located on your instrument panel.
Normal Conditions

Up to five green lights illuminate depending on vehicle use since new or last maintenance. Reduction of illuminated green lights is a countdown for the next service due.
Oil Service Alert
All green lights are off and only the yellow light is illuminated along with the "Oil Service" sign, alerting you that oil service is necessary.
Insepction Service Alert

All green lights are off and only the yellow light is illuminated along with the "Inspection" sign, alerting you that this service is necessary.
Overdue Inspection Service Alert

The red light will illuminate along with the yellow one to serve as a warning that service is overdue; and in the interest of read safety and reliability, avoid driving your BMW. Schedule an appointment immediately.
Re-set to Normal Condition

Once the required service is performed, the technician resets the service interval indicator to "normal" conditions to compute the next service / maintenance interval

BMW service intervals have three main stages.
- Oil Service - Engine oil and filter changes and additional preventative maintenance services
- Inspection I - Major vehicle maintenance as specified in your Service Booklet
- Inspection II - Additional major vehicle maintenance as specified in your Service Booklet
There are also additional services that are not included in the principal service groups, which are required annually. These are:
- Brake fluid flush
- Coolant fluid flush
- Oxygen Sensor replacement
BMW Inspection I
The BMW Inspection 1 Service is the smaller of the two inspection services that are recommended by BMW. It includes all of the items that assures safety and full functionally of your vehicle. This service includes:
Undercarriage service
- Change engine oil and filter
- Check the:
- Engine at its normal operating temperature
- Transmission for leaks
- Condition, position, and mounting of the exhaust system, and examine it for leaks
- Power steering system for leaks
- Overall thickness of front and rear disc brake pads
- Rear axle for leaks
- Steering for absence of play,
- Condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage, and joint disc
- Front control-arm bushing for wear
- Brake and clutch system connectors and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning
- Movement of the parking brake cables
- Condition of tire (outer surfaces (left/right), tread wear and pattern
- All tire pressures (including spare) and correct if needed
- Examine brake disc surfaces.
- Visually inspect the fuel tank, lines, and connections for leaks
- Clean brake pad contact points in calipers
- Grease wheel center hubs.
- Adjust parking brake if necessary
- In case of uneven trade wear, perform a wheel alignment if required
Engine Compartment Service
- Read out diagnostic system/heater hose connection for leaks
- Check the
- Coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
- Level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir; fill if required.
- Windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection; fill and/or correct if necessary
- Heater/air-conditioner for proper operation
- Reset Service Indicator
Body/Electrical Equipment Service
- Perform batter load test
- Check the
- Battery electrolyte level and add distilled water if required.
- Lighting system - headlights, fog lights, parking, backup, license plate, interior, (including map reading lights), glove box, flashlight, illuminated makeup mirrors, and luggage compartment lights
- Instrument panel and dashboard illumination
- Warning/indicator lights and control panel
- Turn signals, hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmers/ flasher switch
- Wiper and washer systems(s) including wiper blades and washer jet positions
- Condition and function of safety belts
- Central locking/double lock
- Heater/air conditioner blower and rear window defogger
- Rear view mirrors
- Grease hood, trunk/tailgate, and door hinges
- Replace microfilter or A/C cabin filter
- Visually examine the SRS airbag units for torn cover, obvious damage, or the attachment of decals, decorations, or accessories
Final Inspection
Road test with a thorough check of the brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual transmission or automatic transmission.
Other makes and models of cars, as well as BMWS, can also utilize this maintenance program to keep them in peak running condition.
BMW Inspection II:
The Inspection II Service is the more extensive of the two Inspection Services. It includes all of the checks performed on the Inspection 1 Service along with the following:
- Differential oil change
- Fuel filter and air filter replacements
- Replacement of spark plugs

- Half-shafts
- Check for leaks at flexible boots
- Inspect entire body according to terms of rust prevention limited warranty
Engine Compartment
- All services as performed for Inspection I
- Diagnostic system readout with BMW Scanners
- Reset Service Indicator
Body/Electrical Equipment
All services as performed for Inspection I
Final Inspection
Road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual transmission or automatic transmission.
